Over the past two years, the Shed Builder Expo has brought educational opportunities to the shed-building industry.
And each year we seek to grow and improve these opportunities.
For 2023, the Shed Builder Expo is introducing a focused seminar series over both days of the show, Sept. 27-28, at the Knoxville Convention Center.
Over two hours each day, 8-10 a.m. before the Expo floor opens, attendees will enjoy focused learning about finances and people. Registration for the series is required (see the sidebar on registration), and seating will be limited.
The four seminars in the series will be conducted by representatives from Gehman Accounting in Pennsylvania and Burkholder Management in Salisbury, North Carolina.
SEMINAR TOPICS
Good financial management is crucial for the success of any business. Even with the best people in place, a lack of sound financial planning can cause your business to falter. That’s why it’s important to create a solid financial foundation by setting realistic budgets, monitoring cash flow, and planning for the future.
However, even with the best financial plans, the wrong people can ruin everything. That’s why it’s important to prioritize skilled and motivated individuals when building your team.
By striking a balance between financial management and people management, you can create a strong foundation for your business to thrive. With this approach, you can deliver value to your customers and stakeholders, and ensure the long-term success of your business.
On the financial side, John Zook from Gehman Accounting will present “A Sustainable Workforce/Employee Compensation” Wednesday, Sept. 27, at 8 a.m.
During the seminar, he will look at the question, “Why would someone want to work at your company?” Points discussed will include:
- Company culture.
- Percentage base pay vs. hourly pay.
- Attracting and retaining quality employees.
- Incentive pay plan.
Zook works on the business advising team at Gehman Accounting. He assists business owners in understanding their financial position, evaluating their company relationships, and finding how they can grow successfully.
Also from Gehman Accounting, Ken Nisley will cover “Job Costing”—the fastest way to make your business profitable at 9 a.m.
Attendees will learn:
- How to apply overhead correctly.
- How positive thinking affects your business negatively.
- What happens if you do not take the time to job cost.
- How much profit per hour you should make.
Nisly works on the business advising team for Gehman Accounting. He is a certified Level 1 instructor in Lead From Your Strengths and enjoys helping business owners discover their individual strengths and how they can effectively contribute to their team.
Nisly maintains that a lack of understanding our strengths results in merely improving our weaknesses to an average level of performance. He believes that growing in our God-given strengths allows us to excel in our created design.
On Thursday, Sept. 28, on the people management side, Duane Burkholder of Burkholder Management will present “Building Effective Teams: Creating a Clear Pathway for Success” at 8 a.m.
In this presentation, Burkholder will share actionable strategies for creating a culture of accountability, setting clear expectations and goals, and establishing transparent decision-making processes. We’ll also discuss the importance of open communication, measuring success, and continuously improving your team’s performance.
As an entrepreneur, business owner, manager, or team leader, don’t miss out on this opportunity to learn from our experiences and take your team’s performance to the next level.
A visionary and “outside the box” thinker, Duane enjoys a wide array of experiences, including working as a boy on a dairy farm, building storage barns in his early 2000s, RTO management since 2008, professional live sound engineer, and custom software project manager.
Finally, LeAnn Burkholder will present “Hiring, Firing, and Team Optimization: Strategies for HR Success” at 9 a.m.
This will be an informative presentation on effective strategies for handling HR issues and maximizing your team’s potential. We’ll share hiring tips, including identifying the right fit, effective interviewing, and avoiding legal pitfalls, as well as firing best practices, such as legal considerations, documentation, and compassionate communication.
Partner/managing director of Burkholder Management, LeAnn joined the shed industry in 2009 and transitioned to her current role as integrator in 2015.
LeAnn and her husband Duane have established two Burkholder support companies, offering hiring/payroll and logistics services to manufacturers across five states. Meanwhile, Burkholder Management continues to provide central office management and RTO account management services to a growing client base across 11 states.
